About Us
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

The Shelbyville–Bedford County Humane Association (SBCHA) was formed in May 1978 as a result of animals freezing to death at the city pound the previous January. It is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization funded through contributions and fundraising events and is run entirely by an all-volunteer staff.
Until 2002, animals were placed in foster homes throughout the county until permanent homes could be found. Since then, a small shelter has been established, although foster homes are still utilized. All animals in the care of SBCHA are examined by a licensed veterinarian, are up to date on vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered when they reach the appropriate age.
SBCHA is completely separate from the Shelbyville Animal Control, which is operated by the city, and the Bedford County Animal Control, which is operated by the county. However, these agencies work together whenever possible for the well-being of the animals.
SBCHA does not distribute donated funds to any other agencies. All donations are used exclusively to support SBCHA and its mission.

Mission
Mission: Our mission at SBCHA is to improve the welfare of all animals in our community through various avenues. We strive to educate the public in responsible pet ownership, the importance of spay/neuter and to give voice and shelter to all the unwanted, abandoned, abused animals in our community.
