ABOUT US

The Shelbyville-Bedford County Humane Association (SBCHA) was formed in May 1978 as a result of animals freezing to death at the city pound the prior January. It is a non-profit 501(C)3 organization that is funded by contributions and fundraising events. It is run by an all volunteer staff.

Up until 2002, animals were kept in many foster homes across the county until new homes were found. Since that time, a small shelter has been opened, but foster homes are still used. All the animals in the care of SBCHA have been examined by a licensed veterinarian, are up-to-date on vaccinations and all have been spayed or neutered that are at the appropriate age.

SBCHA is totally separate from the Shelbyville Animal Control run by the city and the Bedford County Animal Control run by the county. However, these agencies try to work together for the well being of the animals.

Mission: Our mission at SBCHA is to improve the welfare of all animals in our community through various avenues. We strive to educate the public in responsible pet ownership, the importance of spay/neuter and to give voice and shelter to all the unwanted, abandoned, abused animals in our community.

Dolly, a black Collie-mix is surrounded by some of her friends and shelter volunteers (from left standing), Sara Padgett, Kay Madden, Sandra Daniel, Diane Forbes (sitting), Marie Smith, Kitty Graham and Fay Pierce. Dolly came to SBCHA several years ago and was the official door greeter at the shelter until she left us due to cancer in August 2007. She will always be remembered and have a special place in our hearts. Photo by volunteer Kimberly Warren
